Many children's stories feature animals. Maybe not as much, but they are found in MG, YA, and adult books as well. So, to bring to mind how you feel about animals may give you a great idea for a story. And, to me, that is the point of a writing prompt… to give you an idea when you are experiencing writer's block.
Hello everyone! Today's writing prompt is to list your favorite animal and why it is your favorite. It can be a specific animal, like maybe your dog, Rover. Or, it can be dogs in general…or whatever your favorite animal may be.

Hello everyone! Today's writing prompt is a strategy to help get through one of the most popular problems in writing. Often, when we write our topic is too broad. It is difficult to keep on task with our writing, because the topic is to broad. We get lost or overwhelmed and start writing off topic. I can remember writing in school and having teachers tell me to narrow my topic. Hopefully, this prompt will help you do that with your writing. So…choose a topic…say, "education" for example. And, write it at the top of your page. Then, write down as many narrower topics that you can think of that have to do with your broad topic. For example, for the broad topic of "education" you may write things like: special education, science, favorite teacher, how to study for a test, etc. Hello everyone. Today's writing prompt is a list of fears. Most of us have fears in one way or another. It could be fear of public speaking, fear of snakes, fear of closed in spaces, fear of spiders, fear of heights, fear of death…any sort of fear. Some people have multiple fears. Fear is a strong emotion and is often used to build up to climactic moments and pivotal points in the plot. It is a good idea to brainstorm with a list of fears. And, if they are your fears, you may be more apt to make the scene more emotional. Sometimes it is nice to be able to put yourself in the shoes of your characters. Hello everyone! All of us have had a first day of school. Some of us went happily and others not so happily. Either way, there was so much to take in. It makes a perfect event to describe. If you can't remember the first day of preschool or kindergarten, you can always describe the first day of high school or the first day of college. If you are a homeschooler, you could write about the first day of getting together with other homeschoolers. I enjoyed my first day of school! I don't remember all the details. However, I do remember that I had been waiting for months to be able to finally go to school. My husband tells me that his first day of school was not so fun. What about you? What was your first day of school like? Hello everyone! I hope you have fun with today's writing prompt. I believe it takes skill to write a conversation. Sometimes it gets to be too monotonous with the "he said" and "she said." But if you don't think about it. If you just get the conversation out there. If you are thinking about a silly conversation, it might be easier to make the conversation more real. Enjoy! And, as usual, if you choose to use this writing prompt, I would enjoy seeing your results. Thank you. Hello everyone! Here is writing prompt number two in the series for 2014. Yes, it is another list. I promise, they won't all be lists. There will be times when you can dig deep into the art of writing. However, some people like to make lists and find it to be a wonderful way to stay organized. Also, I think that it is easier, when you can't think of anything to write about to be able to refer back to a list of possible ideas. There are a few reasons why I chose emotions as the topic of today's writing prompt. Some of you may know that I wrote a children's book where the identifying and sharing of feelings is encouraged called, "Clarinda Cloud." I think identifying and sharing feelings in a healthy way is very important. Also, stories that include feelings are some of the most inspirational and breath-taking writing out there. People can relate to feelings, because we all have them. Something scary may have us on the edge of our seats. Something sad, may have us choking back tears. If well written, we can feel the feelings of the characters in the story. To make a list, may help us to think about what makes us feel a certain way. If we feel that way, then possibly our character can feel that way and our readers mY feel that way. In this writing prompt, I said to only choose one emotion in which to explore and about which to make a list. However, I encourage you to do it with many emotions. It is a great prewriting exercise! If you use this writing prompt, I look forward to hearing about the results. Hello! Welcome! Do you have a difficult time coming up with writing ideas? Do you want or need to practice writing skills? If so, you are in the right place. Starting today, I am posting writing prompts or story starters on Mondays. Today's prompt is a list. That may not sound like a "real" writing prompt. Yet, listing can be an important step in the writing process. Lists serve as things to remember, ways to categorize, steps in prewriting, and other purposes. They are great ways to brainstorm or just get the mind tuned up. So, get out your writing tablet or open that blank document on your computer and make yourself a list. If you want, feel free to make them separate lists; such as one for people, one for places, etc. Don't forget to write why these are important to you. Feel free to comment some of your highlights! I hope you enjoy this new feature! Stay tuned next Monday for the next writing prompt or story starter! |
